Are you getting tired and bored of your space, but don't really have the budget right now to overhaul it? Redesign it! I did this in 1 day with a friend and was amazed at my new room! Here are some tips for falling back in love with your own stuff.
*Clear out the room - Everything must go out (for now, don't worry, we'll be putting it back in). Empty the room completely, all artwork, rugs, furniture... you need a blank canvas to start with, plus this way you won't be tempted by anything that is currently in it's place. Look at the room with a fresh, new set of eyes, as if you're just moving in for the first time.
*Start Big - Start by putting the largest item back into the room, whether it be the rug or the sofa, try putting it on an angle, try it every possible way in the room, against windows and doors, try something new even if seems kooky to you... it may grow on you! Repeat with all the large scaled items in the room.
*Add Small - Now start adding the smaller items back in, such as side tables and lamps. If it doesn't look just right, try moving it over 3 or 4" one way or the other... tweeking can make all the difference.
*Get Tough - Take a good look at all of your collectibles, knickknacks and decorative pieces. Are they still relevant to today's decor? If you don't absolutely adore it, don't put it back! Simple and clean are in, clutter is out. Same with your artwork, work it back in only if you absolutely cannot live without it.
*Live with It - Live with it for a few days. If you're still dying to put something back that you left out, then go ahead. You may even decide that maybe you do have room in your budget for 1 new thing. It is amazing how much difference 1 new rug or 1 new piece of artwork can make, without spending a fortune on re-doing the entire room.
The room may not be all that different, but I guarantee it will feel different!
